Erli Grünzweil (b. 1992) is a photographer and art director based in Vienna. His work lies at the intersection of observational and staged photography. He is questioning the medium itself through bringing it to its boundaries—the boundaries of lens-based and computer-generated pictures, static and moving images, fact and fiction, fine art and applied photography. The outcome are hybrids which seemingly show ordinary situations or random things, but through aesthetics, types of image production and context it goes deeper and addresses social, political and personal matters. Working for magazines and newspapers including Zeit Magazin, SZ Magazin, Die Zeit, Zeit Campus, Zeit Verbrechen, Der Freitag and Das Magazin.
Staged images about the Munchhausen syndrome by proxy — a condition in which a caregiver creates the appearance of health problems in another person, typically their child.
Detached from the human body, held up by static, animalistic figures, four textiles are shown. They pose the questions: What is real intimacy? Can it exist at a distance — online only?
This em-dash is a homage to Dadaist artist and poet Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven (1874 – 1927). Her poems; performances; costumes and lifestyle all made a point of challenging established bourgeois artistic and moral conventions with an unapologetically feminist, proto-punk aesthetic. Elsa’s ‘signature’ in writing was her manic use of em dashes within her poems. In a quick and simple dash, Elsa had found the perfect material for an expansive range of meaning. The em dash is flexible, working as an appropriation of silence, as acting dissonance, as interruption, as occupying space.
FAZ Quarterly asked me about the future after covid-19. During isolation I took this image and tried to stay positive and imagine a world I’m longing for. A world which will keep on turning even though a little bit slower and more cautious with a more kind, sustainable and conscious society.
